story

Metal factory

One spring Sunday in 1931, 17-year-old Holger Nielsen wins a car in a lottery at the local football stadium. Too young for a driving license, he decides to sell the car and invest in a metal lathe. As a newly educated metal smith, this marks the beginning of Holger’s metal factory in the small Danish town of Randers.

story

'Holger', said Marie

'I need a waste bin for my salon. Can you make me one?' These words mark the beginning of Vipp. And the image shows the first Vipp pedal bin placed in Marie’s salon in 1939. 80 years has passed and it hasn’t aged a day.

story

Anatomy of a bin

In 1939, Holger Nielsen founded Vipp by designing a pedal bin that still looks very much the same today. It was not designed in the strict traditional sense, but got its visual expression in response to a series of functional criteria: A large foot for stability, a domed steel lid that is easy to clean, ears for easy transportation, and a rubber ring at the base for protection of the floor. If it works, why change it.
